Concussion Management: Pre-Injury imPACT® Testing |
Concussion Tip |
![]() ImPACT testing is a computer based neuropsychological test developed by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center over the past 20 years to assess brain function, particularly as it relates to head injury. It uses several different parameters, particularly useful if a pre-injury test is available. |
Individual and team imPACT® baseline pre-injury testing now available at TSC The Sports Clinic at UTM. ImPACT baseline testing measures an athlete's memory, attention, concentration, problem solving abilities, and processing speed down to the millisecond. From this testing we are able to determine the level of function prior to any brain injury. If an athlete then sustains a head injury, he/she would be re-evaluated within a few days of the injury and will receive subsequent follow-up testing as necessary. TSC does team testing through the computer labs at U of T Mississauga or individually at our clinic at UTM. Cost of ImPACT testing is very reasonable and pre-season is the best time to do the testing. For further information contact TSC at UTM 905.820.9292 |
According to ThinkFirst Canada, the most important treatment for a concussion is rest. The child should not exercise, go to school or do any activities that may make them worse, like riding a bike, play wrestling, reading, working on the computer or playing video games. If your child goes back to activities before they are completely better, they are more likely to get worse, and to have symptoms longer. Even though it is very hard for an active child to rest, this is the most important step. | Concussion by definition is a minor traumatic brain injury. We’re not so sure of the “minor” any more. It seems there may be more lasting or permanent effects than we ever knew before . . . |
